1st Grade

In 1st grade, students refine reading skills through rhymes, pattern stories, and beginners' non-fiction books. By the end of the year, most of the children will be reading grade-level chapter books. In math, students begin to grasp more abstract mathematical concepts. They are introduced to time, money, and the meaning of numbers greater than those they can count. They will also begin to do simple addition and subtraction and learn basic geometric shapes. In science, they are introduced to things in the natural world and they learn how all living things are made up of smaller parts. In social studies, students learn about the world, family, school, and neighborhood. In religion, students learn the foundations of the Catholic faith, the seven sacraments, the holy trinity, different saints, and how to pray.
